Never Again, an international Youth network, was founded at the Institute for International Mediation and conflict                                                                                                   Resolution’s 2001 Symposium at The Hague. Never Again  a group of students and young graduates from around the World, created a collaborative international partneer Again aims to alert the international community  to  both the causes and effects of genocide and facilitate the exchange of ideas   between young people- those who have lived through genocide and those who wish to learn from them.

 

 

Goal

 

¨      To enhance the youth’s capacity to analyze the root causes of past conflicts and create space for dialogue among peers so as to generate ideas and action for conflict resolution

 

 

Objectives of Never Again International

  • Create a global youth forum to exchange ideas on Genocide prevention
  • To raise  the international awareness on the genocide and plant a seed to keep the memories unforgotten
  • Encourage youth co-operation through collaborative commemoration
  • Set up ways and mechanisms to use the existing systems to work for genocide prevention
  • Promote research on what happened in Rwanda and put together the findings in order to make it published shared with other countries
  • Increase awareness about the critical importance of peace, reconciliation and economic stability among the youth; as preconditions for Rwanda’s prosperity

 

·        To share knowledge and experience through networking with the international community especially the youth on the causes and effects of genocide and facilitating the exchange of ideas between those who have lived through genocide and those who wish to learn from them.

 

·        To strengthen the ties between local and international community especially the youth, provoking critical thinking about the challenges faced by the two groups in response to and assessing their responsibility in situations of violent conflict.

 

·        To design and share information on early warning and preventive mechanisms on conflict mitigation.

 

 

 

How Never Again Works

¨      Work-Encouraging participating in  local and international activities and programs concerning Dialogue, peace and conflict prevention;

¨      Learn-Knowing the problems and needs of those who are in conflicts or those who have lived through conflicts                                       

¨      Educate: Create awareness among others about violence, conflicts and peace-related issues;

¨      Cooperate: Advocate for cooperation in order to extend our help to all those who need it.

 

Never Again Experience (Accomplishments)

Never again International has planed, organized, and participated in different activities at national, regional and international forums, meetings, and events.

 

  • In the commemoration of the 10 anniversary of 1994 Rwandan genocide between June- August 2004 Never Again with the  funding of US $ 60.000 from DFID through CARE International organized youth history competition with the aim of allowing the youth to express their ideas on the theme ”What can we the youth do so Genocide never happen again”
  • Prof. Eric Markusen, head of the Department of Holocaust and Genocide studies from the University of Minnesota, USA.(October 2004)

 

  • 8th April Never Again organised a public lecture at Kigali Institute of Science and Technology the speaker was Linda Mervern, a renown investigative journalist,  and a scholar at University of ………..
  • In March 27th 2004 Never again international in collaboration with the Imperial War Museum in London organized the Rwandan forum which brought together 300 participants from all over the continent to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide (Visit www.neveragaininternational.org)

 

  • In the years 2003-2004 Never again organized University research trips. Reports of these researches were published in their home countries.

 

  • The following  groups of students came to Rwanda (in 2004) from different Universities;

18 Students from Northwestern University Chicago,

3 students from Vermont University ,USA

6 students from Holland,

11 students from University of Lundi, Sweden

 

  • In 2002, 3 Students from University College of London;

1 student from London school of Economics and political science,

1 student from School of Orient and African Studies ,UK, 

1 student from McGill University Canada,

1 student from Northwestern University,

1 student from Harvard 

1 student from New York University ,USA

 

 

Never Again organised, attended and participated in the following meetings and events:

 

  • 6th april2002 Rwandan genocide Memorial seminar at the school of Orient  and African Studies, remembering Genocide in Rwanda; "Building A firm Foundation for the future"
  • 9th April 2002  8th Anniversary of the 1994 Rwanda genocide at the Memorial service in St Margaret’s chapel, London.
  • 17 May 2002 advisory meeting with Linda Melvern author of A people Betrayed, conspiracy to Murder (Zed Books,2004)
  • 31st May 2002 Advisory meeting with Caroline Phillips, deputy Programme Manager, Rwanda, Africa great Lakes & Horn Department; UK Government Department for International Development.
  • 2 June 2002 Advisory Meeting with Lord Janner of Braunstone QC, chair of Holocaust Educational Trust.
  • 1 July 2002 Seminar organized by by Never again , SOAS Participants included members of Never again , Genocide survivors and members of the Rwandan community in the UK.

 

  • 12 July 2002 Meeting with Suzanne Bargett, Curator of the Imperial War Museum’s Holocaust Exibition and Exibiton crimes Against Humanity: Conflict in our time.

 

  • 17th July Never Again organized and hosted the book launch for: Micheal Barnett’s Eyewitness to a Genocide: The United Nations and Rwanda: Micheal N. Barnett ( Cornell University press, 2002)
